The Vancouver Art Gallery Gets A New home

Blog by Claire LeLacheur | May 16th, 2010

The old courthouse building on Robson Square has housed the Vancouver Art Gallery for over 27 years. Now they say they at a critical juncture and need to expand, stating that their current facitily is not big enough to expose and present all of the exhibitions and the art storage vault under the plaza has been filled to capacity which has lead to expensive off site storage solutions. Above all their chldren's and family programs are stretched for space as well as experiecning overcrowding in the gallery itself.

The new art Gallery will be located at 150 Dunsmuir, which is currently the parking lot for the Canada Post mail trucks. The site has been confirmed, and they have begun to move forward with the process of international architect selection. The new project is estimated to cost 300 million with $50 coming from the province of British Columbia.

For the people who bought at concord Pacific's Cosmo development, the north and west facing suites will look out onto this bulding, which in my opinion, will improve the view greatly. Instead of staring at an empty parking lot, they will be looking at an architecturally designed building, housing some of Vancouver's grratest artistic acheivements.
