Property Tax Assesments

Blog by Claire LeLacheur | January 8th, 2009

Most people are getting their 2009 property tax assessments in the mail over the next dew days. For a few there will be favorable numbrs and for more there will be a mighty surprise!

For this year only your 2009 property assessment notice will show the market value of your property as of both July 1, 2007 and July 1, 2008. The lower of these two values will become the 2009 assessed value if no change has occured to your property.

Gordon Campbell has frozen the property tax assessments at 2007 levels for the reasons that this will provide British Columbia home owners with a sense of security and certainty in these very uncertain times.

The only problem with this whole scheme is that your property assesment has been frozen but not your property taxes. These will stay at 2009 levels, and in most cases they will be higher then they were last year. Welcome to the province that hosts the Olympics!

if you feel that your property tax assesment is unfair or, in the case of some of my clients, blatently wrong, you can appeal at the British Columbia Assessment Board. The website can be found at http://www.bcassessment.bc.ca
