This past weekend those who live near, or close to the Drive celebrated car free days! For those of you who don't know what that is, just listen. The Drive is closed off from Venables Street to East 1st Avenue from about 11:00 till 6:00pm. There are no cars permitted in or out. Many restaurants along the Drive opened up thier venus and set up tables and chairs on the yellow line. There were street vendors, food, live music and best of all community.
Later in the afternoon, I arranged to meet some friends from West Vancouver on the Drive for a drink. When they arrived they couldn't believe thier eyes! Many residents who lived off the drive had set up turntables and had music playing into their front yards, with people dancing and kids decorating the sidewalks with chalk drawings. What a great way to meet my neighbours! My West Vancouver friends could not believe the sense of community, the comraderie, and most of all no one was complaining of the noise! They also couldn't believe that our excuse for having a community event was that there were no cars. ( I think this is why they live in West Vancouver!)
Commercial Drive is a special community compared to most in the Lower Mainland. The best part is we don't need a very big excuse to celebrate community spirit, but having no traffic on the Drive for a day is a big excuse to party! I think....don't you?
